Read Alouds Ranked - No. 15
Hello, readers!
It’s (past) time for another edition of Read Alouds, Ranked — where I share everything I’ve read aloud in the library lately and why it worked (or didn’t). Usually I serve these up monthly, but I got busy writing about other things, so today you get a triple dose: we’re ranking a whopping 28 titles.
Curious about my gleanings from reading the same books over and over to 500 kids each week? This is the place to find out. I do not provide plot summaries in these posts. Instead, the focus here is on read-aloud-ability in the context of group read-alouds (as distinct from 1:1 read-alouds between a parent and child).
Note that each book is selected for read-aloud within the context of a unit of instruction. Today’s list includes selections from a Mac Barnett author study, a unit exploring our Blue Bucket books (the name in our library for our Early Reader section), nominees for our state reader’s choice award (indicated with “WCCPBA nominee”), and my secret theme unit featuring books that break the fourth wall.
Because I’m ranking more titles than usual, my comments on each will be quick and casual. I’ll share a lingering thought or takeaway for each title, and my opinions may get spicy. (Thank you, paywall.) Overall, today’s list is an embarrassment of riches, and you’d do well to place a blanket hold on the top 20-ish, then have a real good time as your holds trickle in.
